What Is Sneaks (2025) About?

Sneaks is a stylized animated sports comedy that blends basketball culture, street fashion, and urban mythology. The film explores sneaker culture from an imaginative perspective, asking a deceptively simple question: Are shoes meant to be worn—or preserved?

Directed by Rob Edwards in his feature debut alongside Chris Jenkins, the movie uses anthropomorphic footwear to discuss identity, usefulness, ego, and redemption, all set against a vibrant cityscape inspired by New York.

Full Movie Plot Summary (Spoiler-Light but Complete)

A World Where Sneakers Are Alive

In this universe, shoes live secret lives when humans are not watching. Their personalities are shaped by how they are treated—worn with pride, abandoned, or locked away as collectibles.

High school basketball player Edson wins an exclusive pair of sneakers: Ty and Maxine. Maxine is thrilled to finally hit the court and fulfill her destiny. Ty, however, is obsessed with staying spotless, believing true value lies in remaining untouched.

The Theft That Changes Everything

Their new owner attracts the attention of The Collector, a former basketball player turned obsessive sneaker hoarder. He breaks into Edson’s home to steal Ty and Maxine, planning to deliver them to his employer, The Forger, a shadowy figure who destroys rare shoes to create counterfeit products.

During the escape, Ty falls from the shoebox and is left behind on a wire.

Enter JB: A Worn Legend

Ty is discovered by JB, an old, scuffed sneaker who has seen better days. JB initially helps Ty because of his luxury appearance, believing Ty might help him regain status. Together, they navigate the city’s hidden sneaker underground.

They meet streetwise shoes at a basketball court and earn information through a pickup game, reinforcing the film’s sports-centric rhythm.

Love, Betrayal, and Truth

Their journey leads them to Adriana, a high heel and JB’s former lover, at a wedding party. She sends them onward to a bowling alley—but tensions rise when Ty learns JB’s help may not have been entirely selfless.

Feeling used, Ty abandons JB.

The Forger’s Cruelty Revealed

Alone, JB encounters a dying shoe mutilated by The Forger, who reveals the horrifying truth: rare shoes are destroyed and repurposed into counterfeits. Realizing what Ty could face, JB chooses self-sacrifice.

When the Collector finds Ty, JB secretly switches places with him and is captured instead.

Redemption and Rescue

Other shoes reveal JB’s tragic backstory: he was once a prized sneaker owned by the Collector himself, abandoned after costing him an important basketball game. Overcome with guilt, Ty rallies the city’s sneakers to rescue JB.

At the Collector’s apartment, chaos erupts. Maxine, now in the Forger’s grasp, leads a rebellion among the Collector’s shoes. The Forger exposes the Collector’s past to the world, humiliating him publicly.

Resolution

Ty and Maxine reunite. JB is saved and reunited with his long-lost brother Spike. In a powerful act of redemption, the Collector returns Ty and Maxine to Edson in time for his big basketball game—allowing them to finally fulfill their purpose on the court.

Production Breakdown

Development

Sneaks originated as a concept exploring sneaker culture through animation, written by Rob Edwards, inspired by hip-hop history and basketball communities.

Critics were divided. Some praised the film’s heart and music, while others criticized animation quality and humor.

Nell Minow (RogerEbert.com) highlighted its warmth and wisdom, while Collider described it as one of the weakest animated releases of 2025.

Box Office Performance

Despite its cultural concept, Sneaks underperformed commercially, grossing just $1.49 million worldwide and quickly losing theaters after its second weekend.
