Full Plot Summary (Spoiler-Light, Detailed)
A Lonely Childhood on Earth
After losing his parents, Elio Solís lives with his aunt Olga, an Air Force major who sacrifices her dreams of space exploration to raise him. Elio struggles with isolation, imagination becoming his refuge. A visit to a museum exhibit about Voyager 1 ignites his fascination with extraterrestrial life and the idea that somewhere in the universe, he might finally belong.
Years later, Elio spends his days wishing to be abducted by aliens. His isolation worsens after an encounter with bullies Bryce and Caleb, culminating in an injury and further emotional withdrawal. Meanwhile, Olga balances military duty with concern for her nephew’s growing detachment.
First Contact and Abduction
At Olga’s workplace, conspiracy theorist Gunther Melmac claims Voyager has received an alien reply. Though dismissed, Elio secretly uses Melmac’s device to transmit a message into space. The transmission triggers a power outage and nearly costs Olga her career. In response, she sends Elio to youth camp — a decision that heightens his fear of rejection.
That same night, Elio’s message is answered. He is abducted by aliens and transported to the Communiverse, a breathtaking intergalactic assembly of alien civilizations.
The Communiverse and a Dangerous Mistake
Inside the Communiverse, Elio is greeted by Ooooo, a shapeshifting liquid supercomputer. Due to a misunderstanding, the alien ambassadors believe Elio is Earth’s official leader and creator of Voyager 1. Before he can explain the truth, chaos erupts.
Lord Grigon, a warlord rejected by the Communiverse, launches an invasion. Fearing annihilation, the ambassadors plan to send Elio back to Earth. Desperate to belong, Elio volunteers to negotiate with Grigon in exchange for becoming an official ambassador. A clone — Other Elio — is sent back to Earth to take his place.
Friendship with Glordon
Elio is imprisoned after offending Grigon but meets Glordon, Grigon’s gentle, misunderstood son. Despite their differences, the two bond over feelings of isolation. Elio learns Glordon is expected to become a living weapon — a destiny he fears.
Elio forms a risky plan: use Glordon as leverage to force peace. He returns to the Communiverse with Glordon and offers Grigon a deal — withdraw the invasion in exchange for his son’s safety. Grigon agrees, but mistrust lingers.
Truth, Betrayal, and Loss
Elio hides the real Glordon and gives Grigon a clone instead. The deception is discovered. Ambassador Questa reads Elio’s mind, revealing his true nature as a lonely child. Disillusioned, the Communiverse sends Elio back to Earth.
Meanwhile, Glordon accidentally travels to Earth, landing at Olga’s military base. Other Elio sacrifices himself to distract authorities, allowing Olga and the real Elio to rescue Glordon.
Final Confrontation and Resolution
With help from amateur radio enthusiasts worldwide, Elio and Olga pilot Glordon’s shuttle through space debris back to the Communiverse. Grigon, realizing his mistakes, abandons his warpath to save his son, reconciling with him and the ambassadors.
Elio is offered permanent ambassador status but declines, choosing Earth and his aunt. The film ends with Elio returning home — no longer alone — confident in who he is.
